What was the plywood shelf in a 1946-1947 Chevrolet coupe painted , black paint ? or some kind of varnish? thanks

My guess is was only coated with a sealer and painted with the body after installation.

although I have no experience with 46-7 coupe plywood finish, the 53-62 corvette spare tire plywood pieces were low gloss black paint(perhaps a stain?) as gene mentions above.originl c-1 corvette plywood had 5 layers or plys. mike

Having viewed some of the black coated plywood, my guess is it is a stain not a paint. Could be a highly thinned paint as there is penetration into the wood and little to no buildup on the surface.
