This may have applications over a wide number of year models even though I'm mostly interested in 41.
How is the best way to mount 40 and 41 wheel discs without leaving a scratch on the paint. The 40 shark teeth and the 41 Also, the trim rings.
I'm thinking that some tape of some king on the parts that do the scratching may be effective but never tried it. The 40 look good on a 41 but may need to be removed for judging or some other venue such as a Chevrolet show.
Also, if you don't have a perfect (pristine) set (or any accessory item) for judging, then expect points off.

While you can get a lot of information for free in this forum, sometimes the info that you REALLY need is only available from the right person. This is what "The World's Best Chevrolet Club" is all about!
I can not think of any way to install the trims rings so the stay in place and not scratch the paint. If it were my car I would leave the wheels as is with the nice srtipe etc. Kind of refreshing to see a '41 with no wheel trim.
I spent quite a bit of time repairing the damage to the paint on the wheels of my '37 Master coupe. Uncle Jimmy had replaced the original hub caps with aftermarket full wheel covers. Those definitely messed up the paint.
I sanded, primed, and repainted only the outer portion of the wheel from the edge of the rim to the first drop in the wheel. That left the rest of the wheel original including the stripes.
They are a long way from perfect but they fit well with the overall condition of the car. They are faded but if you look closely you can see the stripes. Fortunately the original hub caps were in a box in the trunk
what I have done to preserve the rims from marks is to have a second set of rims & tires to use and install the wheel trim on them ,and paint the painted part that shows the proper color and mount them thus saving the originals for show purposes. this also gives you the option of changing the 40s for the 41s whenever you want without worry. I am glad that you finally got a conv that you can enjoy. best fo luck with it.
I would like to add that when I had my tires mounted on my freshly painted rims I had the work done at Belle Tire. They even balanced the rims with weights on the back to preserve the pristine look on the front. I stood right next to one of their managers while they did the work. I ended up with no scratches etc. To keep from scratching my rims when removing the hubcaps I use the tools in the picture to slide under the hubcap.
Good luck, Mike
P.S. One of these days I will have the rims pin striped.
That is forbidden! You can't do that. To remove the hubcaps you must use a tire iron or a screwdriver. Back in the day one didn't have the stuff you used. Accordingly, after having thought about it, I think points should be taken off it there are no scratches on the wheels. Of course, I just kidding.
A great idea to use something that won't leave behind a scratch. Also, good idea to witness the work being done onn your wheels at the tire chaning shop, if that is permitted. Most places now adays don't allow the customer around the equipment. They claim insurance liability. I think it is because they don't want you watching them put the lug nuts on with the air gun set at near maximum torque but just low enough to not wring a stud off..
They used to sell striping kits at Hershey with a divice to hold the paint brush as it circled the rim. I haven't seen any lately though.
You're a real good thinker and inspirational asset when it comes to treating your old cars delicately. I appreciate the expertise and skill evidenced in that trait.
It seems that getting the hubcap (wheel cover per AACA) is the worst thing we encounter as far as scratching the rim paint. The plastic seems the way to go on that.
What bugs me more is that I can't stand å wheel that has no trim rings on the wheel.
Also, i want the Shart Teeth when the car is not going to be judged and 41 rim covers (non-shark teeth when is, if ever.
Unlike Gene, I think a "Plain Jane,' rim is downright ugly. To me it demonstrates that the owner merely wants no points off in judging on account of dressing the rim up so that it looks presentable. It is as bad as not having fender skirts on a 49-52.
Although, the rims are now pristene on the car from CA, ” hey are not as presentable as they would be with the rings and ST or 41 covers. My opinion.
That's not the biggest problem I have read elsewhere about the title problem.
Belle Tire put new plastic pieces on their tire mounting machine before they mounted my rims. I choose not to dress up my rims with beauty rims and also white walls because I wanted the overall focus on my car to be drawn to the beautiful body and not to the rims and tires. I do not take it as much of a comment to have someone's first comment being anything to do with my rims and tires. I like reminding others with minimal 41 knowledge that the standard 41 Master Deluxe did not come from the factory with white walls.
