What am I missing here. All four wheels will slide if I pull the emergency brake but I cannot get them to slide using the foot brake. It seems that I have all four wheels adjusted correctly. I know I'm missing something simple.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Jim

Is the rod from the pedal going to the top hole in the cross shaft lever? There are two holes the same size. The bottom one is for the return spring. They are often in the wrong position.

Well I checked today and the rod is in the top hole. I re-oiled everything again while I was under there.

I will keep trying and checking things till I get it right !!!!!!!!

Jim, where does the other end of the return spring hook on to? I've got a 35 Standard Coach and am putting everything back together and am totally stumped. Help me, please.

Thanks,

Pete, mine has about a 4' long by 3/16" rod that is bent on both ends ( C shaped on the ends ) . One end hooks to the spring with a chain looking link between the spring and the rod the other end is hooked in one of the large holes in the frame. I'm not positive it is correct but the pedal returns nicely and has been that way since my Dad bought the car 38 years ago.

My 35 return spring is about 7" overall in length to which a 6" piece of wire is attached. This wire has a bend on each end, one to hook on to the spring and the other hooks around one of the large hole on the cross member. The one closest to the centre. My car is RHD but there should be no differences I would think.
As to the brake problem, has the hand brake and brake pedal rods been set up as per the workshop manuals instructions?

Jim and Ron, Thanks for the information. I will try to figure it out from there. Jim, a 4 FOOT rod, or did you just hit the wrong key? it sounds like the links you talk about are similar to the clutch links. Ron, I haven't got to the setup yet. Wanted to get the pedals working first. Thanks again to both of you. Pete V

Does your foot brake pedal drop when you apply the "emergency" brake? On my '35 Std coupe, applying the "emergency' brake will cause movement of
the foot brake pedal! Possibly, one of the cables or links may be in the incorrect link! Either one should actuate the brakes exactly the same!

When I apply the emergency brake there is about 1 and 1/2 inches of play on the brake pedal. I agree either one should apply the same presser to the brakes. I will check it next week.

Thanks Jim

I really do appreciate everyones help with this !!!!!!!

In addition to the rods the adjusters should be at a 90 degree angle to the rod when applied. More or less of an angle will cause decreased pressure according to my 49 Raybestos manual.

So today I put her up on jack stands and everything seems to check out ok. I checked the measurements as per the repair manual and lubricated every moving point. The weather was bad here today so I could not test drive it. I will take her out for a test drive and let you all know. If it is still not right I'm going to take her to a local shop and put it up on their rack were I can get a better look and study it better.

Driving in the rain is about the only time my car gets washed! Hope you find the right adjustment.

I drove her to a car show this evening about 20 miles round trip and the brakes were much better. I'm going to make one more small adjustment tomorrow to the return spring and I think all will be good. I really didn't do anything major just some small adjustments and re-oiled everything it seems to be very finicky !!!!!

What is your return spring connected to and how did you adjust it?

It is connected to one of the holes in the crossmember by piece of about 3/16" wire. I needed a little more tension on the spring so I just shorten the wire a little !!!!!! I drove it about 10 miles today and it was much better.

On my 32 I have an eyebolt thru the hole in a crossmember for the spring to attach to. That way it can be adjusted easily.

I like that idea about the eyebolt. What did Chevy use originally? You use an eyebolt, Jim uses a wire, I'm sure there are other remedies? These are the brakes we are talking about. Rather important. I can't see Chevy using some Mickey Mouse way to stretch the return spring.
