I bought a set of reconditioned rods for my spare parts shelf. They were bargain priced so I couldn't resist ! They are for a 1937 to 1947 216. They were re-manufactured by the Daniel Heil. company. The boxes are marked 002 which I would think stands for .002". So measuring across the bore near the parting line with a pair of digital calipers it looks like they could be very close to standard or .002". It comes with a shim pack installed on each side that are over 30 thousandths thick! I can peel the pack with a knife and the first layer I looked at appeared to be .001 ". So these rods would install with about .030" of shims on both sides. I am used to seeing .006" in shims to start off with. They are close to .002 under in the vertical direction with the full shim packs installed.


My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .

The rebuilder may have used a different thickness of babbitt than what Chevrolet did in 1937-1947 and made up for it with shims.
The babbitt was .005" to .010" for 1937-1947 and was reduced to .003"-.007" in 1948.The thinner babbitt compresses less and rods require less adjusting with the thin babbitt.
You will also find rods from different engines are of different weight. w Chevrolet built te engine thay chose rods of the same weight for one engine-the same with pistons. If you ever use the rods have them balanced. Also the 37-47 rods came with three different forging numbers. OK to mix as long as the weight is the same.

I am thinking that maybe they shaved the parting surfaces by that amount but didn't do a rebore. I wonder about rods that have that amount of brass in shims between the parting surfaces !

Has anyone seen that name before, Daniel Heil mfd ?
