Buona sera a tutti. Someone knows the spark plug wires resistance for Chevy 1929 whit 12v electrical system? I'd like to know the spark/distributor wire resistence and the coil/distributor wire resistence. Thank you all. Saluti dall Italia
Are you asking about a resistance wire to the coil or about spark plug wires? Get a 12 volt coil with a built-in resistor and you won't need anything more. If you're asking about spark plug wires suit yourself as long as you're using 12 volts.......either WIRE wires or carbon won't matter. WHY it was changed to 12 volts is my question.
I have 12 volt because the car was in this state when I bought it. I'd like to know both the spark/distributor wire resistence that the coil/distributor wire resistence becase my wires have difference resistences (spark wires from 4 k ohms to 9 k ohms, coil distributor wire has a resistence higher. Later I write the values
No. The lenghts of the wires is equal (30 / 35 cm) Here my values: wire cylinder n.1 (on the steering side): 7,2 k ohms wire cylinder n.2: 9,1 k ohms wire cylinder n.3: 5,2 k ohms wire cylinder n.4: 5,3 k ohms wire cylinder n.5: 6,5 k ohms wire cylinder n.6 (on the radiator side): 8,9 k ohms
First off, your 1929 Chevrolet engine does not need resistance carbon core spark plug wires no matter what the voltage. These engines have a hard time getting a good spark to the spark plugs with stranded copper core spark plug wires ( I hate it when people say "Solid core spark plug wire" as solid copper core wire is used in house wiring and not in vehicles) much less using resistance wire which is hard on the ignition coil if a weak or substandard (cheap) coil is used. You only need resistance spark plug wire if you have a radio or some electronic component such as electronic ignition with a microprocessor in it.
Resistance spark plug wires have resistance ratings from 500 ohm per foot (30.5 cm) and higher depending upon what kind of wire it is. The best wire to have on you 1929 Chevy would be stranded core wire. This has the least resistance and gets optimal spark to the spark plugs. If your using your digital ohm meter correctly, then the ohm readings you are getting are way to high. I was taught years ago that the ohm readings should be no more than 1000 ohms per foot (30.5 cm) on used or old wire.
As a member noted before, if you have a 12 volt system, you should have a 12 volt coil with an external resistor if you have a non internal resistor coil which should say on the coil body "Use only with external resistor" or a 12 volt coil that has an internal resistor wire built inside of it (should have 3-4 ohms resistance from the + side to the - side on the coil).
I bought a custom made set from Bob Marx, beautiful set !! Spark Plug Wire Set
I will be calling Bob next week when I get home to order some spare wire and connectors for my emergency road kit. That way IF anything happens to one while out cruising or on a tour I can make a spare :)

The 1929-32 cloth covered, black lacquered spark plug wires originally had brass spark plug terminal ends with the Chevrolet Bow-Tie stamped on the terminal ends.
problem is NO ONE has any of the Bowtie Connectors, and seems NO ONE is reproducing them :(
IF anyone knows anyone selling a set or such let me know, been looking for last few years, scanning auctions, articles, etc... My original set on my car had 1 or 2 bowties, the rest were aftermarket look alikes but NO Bowtie :(
also seems everyone sells STEEL connectors.

It is a little hard to see but this is what the bowtie looks like. Not sure if these are repo or oe , they came with the car (as did the non AC plugs).
