I have a 1966 El Camino that is an original documented 49000 mile car. The data plate and the vin number do not match. The Vin # says it's a 13580 (Custom El Camino 6 cylinder). The data plate says it's a 13680 (Custom El Camino 8 cylinder). The vin says it is the 7566 one built and the data plate says it was the 313 built. The Trim codes are correct for the car. It is pretty obvious the data plate nor the vin # have been removed from the car. Did Chevrolet affix incorrect data plates to automobiles coming down the line. I have heard stories of this happening.
Thank you, Mark Ourant

Yes-the 6 and 8's were often mixed.
