What is the best way to lift a 216 engine? Head bolts or exhaust manifold? The front clip is off of my 47 convertible. I need to install the engine and transmission (they were removed over 30 years ago).

Thanks,

Perol

I made a lifter with an angle iron and a eye bolt. Drilled the angle to fit over the valve cover studs. Picked up many complete engines with bell housing and never had a problem.

I also used angle iron bolted using rocker arm studs, worked great.

I agree with Gene. Head bolts using a tilt devise at the hoist hook.

I suppose the valve cover/valve train bolts are strong enough but using them makes me feel a little queasy. greenman I successfully used them once way back but I didn't feel good about it and so I haven't done it again.

I support the use of an engine leveling device so you can control the angle of the engine as you raise and lower it. It is especially useful when you are pulling the complete drivetrain.

If you watch some of the films on YouTube about Chevy assembly lines you will be amazed how they lift the powertrain. In the 1936 file it appears that they have some type of lifting device attached to the carburetor mount on the intake manifold. Of course they are working with a bare frame so they can drop it vertically into the chassis. And they do have the "wrestle" it into position while the line is moving.
