The damage was caused by stuck intake valves.

If your car has been set up for a long time you would be wise to remove the valve cover and us a small hammer to strike the pushrod end of the rocker arm to see if the valve moves. If one or more are stuck you may have luck spraying WD-40 or any other type of lube directly on the valve through the layers in the ring and continue to gently strike the rocker arm with your hammer.

Could this have been caused by a stripped timing gear?

The 216 isn't an interference engine so I don't think so. Stuck valves is almost always the issue. I went through the same thing with my '38 only I didn't break any rocker arms, just bent pushrods.

Yes, I didn't tthink of the stripped timing gears. Remove the distributor cap and turn over the engine if possible. If the rotor does not turn the gears are stripped. A common failure on old engines.

I done that rotor turns looked to be in time, The car it was in had sat for a long time, Looks like with the fat push rods it could have had a problem before. I was wondering if the replaced push rod could be to long?

Compare "fat push rod" length to the thin pushrods. The 216 push rod is 10 7/16" long. The fat push rods probably are replacement type hollow push rods. A much better push rod the the Chevrolet thin type. I ran them in my '39.
