My 31’s grill emblem fell off at some point recently, so I ordered another. The screw on the back of the new one doesn’t line up with the hole in stone guard. Was a different emblem used on the stone guard vs. the grill? To use the new one could I melt the solder that holds the screw in place and reposition the screw? I don’t want to damage the face of the emblem. Thanks, Sid

Hi Sid --

Yes, they are different. the emblem for the '31 stone guard has a smaller mounting cup, mounted off-center, to conform to the mounting screw recess in the stone guard.

My solution has been to remove the threaded stud on the back of the new emblem using a dremel tool or die cutter (be careful not to get the new one hot -- a wet rag is useful as a heat sink), then mount the new one using 3M double sided trim mounting tape (white foam rubber with adhesive on both sides), which is the way most emblems and trim are mounted on modern cars. That's worked well for me.

All the Best, Chip

There is also a slight difference in height and width and color of the enamel. I bought one of the replacements years ago and returned it as I was not impressed with the quality or mounting supplied and the color was lighter then original.
