Either the surface should be refaced at the correct conture or replaced with new. Will be impossible to adjust correctly with the wear pattern.

My machine shop refaced these automatically without me even asking. They were very inexpensive.

While that rocker is worn it is not bad, your machine shop should be able to reprofile them and you wont know the difference.

My machine Shop didn't had the Rocker arms when the engine was refurbished. A shop near me, wants about 40 Dollar per Rocker Arm for refurbishing!

I see NOS rocker arms on Ebay all the time cheaper than that. Even if a machine shop took their time, there's a maximum of maybe 2 hours labour to clean up a dozen of these. You may need new rocker shafts and bronze bushings in the rockers too if the tips are this worn. The shafts/bushings are also on Ebay regularly for under $50USD for the whole set.

My machine shop reamed and replaced my bushings to match new shafts - this is when they dressed the rocker tips at the same time without me needing to ask. Sadly it's hard to find a shop with this level of old engine experience and care. When I first phoned them when trying to locate a suitable machinist, one of the FIRST questions the 18 year old kid on the phone asked me was "do you still have babbited rods with shims or have they been converted to inserts". I couldn't get my engine there fast enough when an 18 year old kid could actually picture and understand the guts of my engine.

I rebuilt my rockers myself. Although it was a '28 engine, the basics are the same.

For your reading pleasure, here's the description and some photos of what I did: '28 rocker rebuild

Cheers, Dean

Yep, that thread is a masterpiece Dean! I could read your threads all day even if they were about Ford engines...

Alligator you said "refurbishing" so I would think they mean supply and install new bushes as well as reface the valve end. My local shop refaces the end only for $5 or $6 each.

@canadiantim - Show it to me,can't find them. Remember I need the exhaust rocker arms - 838999!!

@Rustoholic - nice work wow but as you can see on the picture, not the bushing is the problem

@Tony - no, only grinding! But i hope his price is not usual for this work
Rocker arm grinding

Tested refacing with a whetstone, think that would work. Will take a photo on thursday

The link shows a lot more involved (more worn) than yours. If you were patient and careful with a very fine grinding wheel you could nearly do them yourself. The hardest part is keeping it square to the wheel while following the radius. I have done it though not very well.

Here are the pictures. Before and after. Now tested with a "Dremel". Think that looks good.

Take a look at the old posting
https://vccachat.org/ubbthreads.php/topics/344172/re-1940-216-engine-disassembly.html#Post344172
Think i made a mistake. This caps with the Mark "IN" are on the Exhaust valves, not on the Intake?! Look at the picture of the reassembled engine

Elevation also counts on timing; 1 degree advance per 1000 feet.
