Hey everyone im wanting to swap the engine in my 37 fisher body i want something that will go in as easy as possible without modifying the chassis, i was thinking of getting a 261 but they seem to be to hard to find in australia, and i dont really want to get a 235 or 216 for it. Does anyone know if a 250 or 292 will fit? By just making engine mounts? Or are they to long? Any other engine susgestions? Thanks

Stormrh I would (and have) rebuild the original engine as it is by far the easiest way. I have done several engine and or gearbox swaps in other vehicles and each time there have been major hassles that nearly canned the exercise or caused major compromises part way through. In most cases with the enclosed driveshaft vehicles when you change the engine you end up changing the complete driveline then you no longer have a standard car. Tony

I know a gear box builder, his built a custom gear box for my 36, so i can get the same done for the 37 :) I was looking into turning a 235 into a 261, do you have much info on that tony? Any pages that i can read about how to do it? Or a list on what needs changing? Thanks heaps for all your help tony :)

If a 261 is not feasible, then go with a 235. A 1954 235 will be easiest owing to the water pump issues. A later 235 is a bit more trouble. How about a 292. May have to move the radiator toward the grille some but can be done, I think. I'm not sure about the last statement. The 292 would make that car/truck haul axx. It's about as big a six as there is in old Chevrolets. Good luck with it. I hope you find a suitable engine. A 1953 made for fit with a Power-glide would be my option if it were me. Charlie

I havent looked into the details of differences between 216/235/261 but think the later 2 are longer than the 216 therefore water pump to radiator issues are likely but by what I have read on here the 235 (at least) swap is quite possible without moving the radiator. All of my swapping has been on much later models so dont want to advise you to do something that cannot happen without very detailed information. Tony
