Ok here is what I have done so far to my small block chevy to try and fix this problem. First I was fouling plugs and way too much fuel in the exhaust, strong smell, burning eyes. I called up Crane and got a cam with matching lifters (Adv. Duration: 290º Gross Lift: .454'' RPM Range: 2000-5000 Cam & Lifter Kit ), and springs, new MSD ignition, New Mallory Ignition, New Intake (Weiand) I did however forget to take out the divider plate which I am going to do later today, it is X-CELerator, 1500-6000 rpm part number 925-7546 from Jegs, I also have a new Edelbrock 750 carb, we have not set the timing with a timing light only by ear, I drove it down the road yesterday and it ran awesome, but still smoke with a definite fuel smell? I don't know what else to do? Should I take it somewhere and have them tune it in for me? What else could it be?

Got the timing set (with a light this time, and set with the block) not much of a change yet, seems a little better, but the plugs are fouled again (3rd set) going for the 4th set Thursday, then we are going to see if we need to jet the carb down.

I finally did a compression check (Needed the pressure checker), so how about a show of hands who believe that this motor has way too low compression at less that 8:1 more like just 8? A couple people have told me already that this is my main problem that my compression is just way too low?

So what was the compression in P.S.I. of each cylinder? that is what tells you if you have a bad cylinder, isn't it? look for one or two to be a quite a bit lower than the others.

Sorry but this is just getting over my head, I just had someone from a local race shop come over and check with a compression guage on the cylinders and he just told me that the compression was 8:1 and some a little lower? He didn't take the time to show me exactly how to use and read the guage. Maybe I shouldn't be asking these questions and letting someone else handle it from here.

Sounds like too much cam and not enough compression, 8:1 is a bit of a dog for all of that fuel How much vacume are you pulling at idle? You can go to a hotter plug and that might help with the fouling problem, but a stock cam/carb/and intake would work the best. I had run into a similar problem wih a friend who had to have a four barrel on his 66 Impala. He ended up getting a quadrajet with the intake, he was never happy. It just ran best with the 2 barrel. For that combo you need about 9:1 to 9.5:1 compression. It can easily be done but you will need to get some smaller CC heads, but I would not suggest running this car all around with the cylinder walls getting washed with gas.
One last thing when you are changing cam profiles from stock then throw out the timming light. Those marks and specs are given for the stock cam. Pretty much you have to bring it up till it pings and then bring it back down a bit just till it stops pinging, but it is best done by ear and use of a vacume guage. Also try not o go over 10:1 on the compression, because you ping all of the time
Good luck,
John

Thanks, you have had the best advice that a beginner like my self can understand. I am planing a fresh rebuild that should have been done in the first place and bringing the compression up to 10:1, also am planning some new dart heads.
