I hope this doesn't bother the dealers that depend on us for our old parts but read on.

I just got back from going to pick up some parts I ordered yesterday from a local parts dealer.

Car Quest got me two new grease seals for the front end of the 41 project car.

Also, eight new studs (lugs) for the hubs. I already had two NOS hubs but they were without the studs.

All waa had over the counter for a little less than $48 including tax.

Point is you never know what your local parts dealer can get you until you ask. dance

Occasionally I have found that the dealer is cheaper than the after market supplier though my local GM dealer laughs at me when I ask for a part even when I have the original part number, his computer shows unknown number or wants more numbers.

NAPA is a good source for general mechanical parts. Any parts store "should" have the necessary books to look up old parts if the counter person is willing to ditch the computer and look them up. I've had better luck with the long time parts stores in town rather than chain stores.

C-86 plugs? I was told that the C-86 plugs were discontinued years ago and that the only plugs available are the AC C-87 plugs.

Tony

GM often changes part numbers for a variety of reasons (new suppliers, design changes, etc.). 30 years ago when parts & numbers were published in catalogs, (and not accessible to dealers via computers), some of the part numbers in the catalog would change frequently.

I believe that GM dealers today can look up part numbers for a 63 Y Body Corvette with their computer system, but obviously they are not going to stock the majority of component parts for that vehicle.

I went to AutoZone for AC R45 spark plug. They did not show them in there computer. O'Riely's had them on the shelf. Goes to show, you just have to look around.

C-86 is not in the ACDelco online system but C-87 is. I suppose there is a chance they had old inventory still available?

Charlie, how did they look them up at CarQuest? What they do at mine sometimes is look the part up in one of the old catalogs and then type the number into the computer. The computer sometimes responds to the number but will not recognize the old number with the search feature.

I don't know how they looked them up. He called me behind the counter and asked me if the item he had broueht up looked like what I wanted. It did and was.

The lugs he had in stock except for four.

It does help if the item you want covers several years. The seals were the same up to and including 54. Don't know about the span for the lugs.

Best,

I got 3 "BestBrake" brake hoses for the 41 project car yesterday from O'Reilly Auto Parts. Total including tax was: $40.41.
