I am looking at a 1936 2-door with the humpback trunk. Amatuer restoration. I has good looking paint on it but I suspect that it may have a lot of bondo under the paint. There is some rust coming through at the bottom of the trunk lid. I did see that where the rear bumper brackets go through the rear pan to the frame there is cracking on both sides around the brackets. Can you guys tell me where this model might be likely to rust so that I know where to look for body filler?

Stick a small magnet on it and where she lived would be an indicator too. Climate, salt, etc.

If the car is from Illinois is a part of the rust belt and its probably got plenty of bondo in it like you think it does. If rusting at bottom of trunk lid, its just an item area they missed.
Bottom of doors, bottom of cowl, quarter panel behind doors............all spots most likely to be rotten. Treat the car as possible junk and tread lightly.

Amateur resto means body man in a can , applied liberally.

A few of the televised car mod shows have had vehicles brought into them and when paint taken off its like previous owner had a franchise in bondo .

Buy the absolute best original vehicle you can find or buy a quality resto and pay more for that quality.

A 36 chev sedan/coach is of little value or interest to most people. Kinda ugly duckling of the chevies , the way they refer to 38 fords.

You guys are way off on the "ugly duckling". They are quite a collectable do to the fact that they are 1/2 wood and 1/2 steel under the body or the early ones are the very last of the entirely wood body frame. This is a "change over year". I love the Art Deco design of that era. The modernism of a by gone time and the attempt to do something entirely different in design.

art deco , never in my/our worst nightmare would a 35-36 chev be spoken about in any automotive circle.

I think if you google ART DECO PERIOD , its not going to mention 35 and up ford, chev, mopar cars.

FORWARD THINKING art deco WOULD BE A DESOTO OR CHRYSLER ...........airflow series also considered an ugly


I rank that 35-36 master series right beside the Pontiac AZTEX for complete , what were they thinking styling wise, both are BUTT UGLY .

I agree with terrill, I think they are handsome cars if not beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Now in my eye the airflows were sort of ugly!

Michael Mann liked the looks of them well enough to use one as a get-away car in Public Enemies, even though it was supposed to be 1934.....and the six cylinder was no match for the Ford V-8.

How can you call a '38 Ford ugly? Car that is, the '38 pickups were butt ugly, the pickup grill just was...wrong..

I dont know about the frords being "butt ugly" but certainly not pretty. I still prefer the Chev in the beauty competition.

I have 36 chomp back 3rd owner olive in mass don't drive in winter about it from 86 year old laid lm verve luckey no rust ex truck lid which good luck I'll keep an out. Jackko

I dunno, guys. I have two '36's and I call them "handsome". One common facelift procedure I've noticed is dropping the headlights around 3 inches. This is pretty common on modern hot-rods, and I think it looks pretty good. A quick search on ePay shows the difference. I would NEVER modify my original sedan like that, but might consider it when I build my hotrod coupe.
