Is the gas filler cap (as installed at factory) painted body color or stainless/chrome?

My standard [being the plain car] is a '36 and it is painted black. Perhaps a Master would have chrome.

Totally a different car than a 35 Standard. Gene is right, both 35 Standards and Masters are Chrome.

Thats interesting because all the factory pictures I have show chrome. I would think it would have been cheaper for Chevrolet to purchase all chrome caps from Stant than paint each cap to match the car color.

I have never seen a GAS TANK CAP offered on ebay in anything other than chromed or stainless steel.

The painted gas caps I remember were the 1942-1948 models. Being painted to match the body color made the cap less conspicuous.

You can go to any parts store and buy a cap. The Stant number is/was G23. Unfortunately, todays laws require some sort of warning sticker to be on the cap. To accommodate the sticker, they have modified most caps with a flat spot in the middle. Most of the caps on eBay are new caps with the flat spot. The seller goes to his local parts store and buys the cap, removes the sticker and lists it on eBay as if it was a hard to find item.
This cap fits a ton of Chevys from 1928 into the 70s.
The last painted caps, I know of, were on the '67-'72 pickups.
