magazine articles occasionally state "derivations of the '29 chevrolet six were used until 1962" or words to that effect. Were the 230 c.i. and 250 c.i. straight sixes that followed in 1963/4/5 radically different than the wonderful 235 c.i. six-banger of 1953 - 62?

Yes they were. The 230, 250 and 292 were thin wall castings. The back of the engine would accept the same bell housing as the V8. The 250 had a very well balanced ceankshaft with a counterweight on each throw.

The 194-230-250-292 engine shared nothing with the 235. It had 7 main bearings, used the same pistons a a small block V-8, had the stamped rocker arms like a small block, It was a "modern" engine with a large bore short stroke (except the 292) built in full flow oil filter, and much lighter than a 235.
