I have a 1938 Chevrolet radio, (similar to the one in the photo). Is there any way to remove the radio dial and replace it? The face plate on mine is damaged and I would like to repaint it.
You show a picture of a 1938 control head. I assume you have the correct 38 radio that goes with that head along with the speaker.
I don't know what you need to repair. If you just need the control head dissembled I can do that for you. If the dial needs reprinted, I can have that done by my person.
I already took the radio head apart. I just wanted to remove the needle and repaint the face. If I use a fork to pry the needle off, will it press back on?
There are some pictures here somewhere of Tiny's 38 radio install but could not find them. Try some searches on this site and maybe Tiny will see this and post some in case they were photobucket victims.
The radio was just left of centre I believe (cables are only so long). Firewall speaker was to the left of the driver and the roof speaker went dead center just back from the windshield. Going from memory but the speaker waaaay over to the left stands out in my mind...

Wrong radio but the locations would be what you were looking for. Makes sense with speaker in middle. Knew something was over to the left, just didn't think the radio control cables were that long ...

How can you tell its a 37 radio? I recently learned that the Master series had dark brown knobs unlike the ivory knobs on the Master deluxe. I could be wrong, my wife reminds me of it all of the time.
The radio head in dash indeed looks correct like you said. The angle is tough to see details well though.
Think AntiqueMechanic is referring the the radio box itself under the dash being 1937. I'm not familiar enough with these to know what it is, it's just different than the 1938 radios I have. The speaker is unusual. The ones I've seen are shallower and have a very plain grill.

Funny, I actually bought a 37 radio set because I couldn’t find a 38 at the time. I have since purchased a NOS 38 control head hoping the cables will work with the 37 box
The control head knobs are black for 1937 and Ivory for the 1938.
If you have access to the 1980-85 G&Ds I have written a story on each radio in detail.
The 1938 NOS control heads require special cables and they do not work on any other control head. The 38 NOS control heads were intended to be used in the Partial Radio Campaign. The dealer installed the control head without charge to entice the owner to purchase the complete radio.
Every Chevrolet radio has an "Instructions for Installation of Chevrolet (description of the radio) in (year) and Part number".
For a nominal fee the stories and Instructions books are available.
Things are made complicated by the availability of more than one Model radio per year. For example there are 7 correct radios for 1935.
