On a l931 engine is the spark plug wire on the distributor cap always in one particular spot? I have an old note saying the No. 1 wire lines up with a screw in the distributor body. Before I started making adjustments, mine was at the next position to the left? Please help.

Also I want to set the timing 18 degrees advanced (i.e., BTDC) and my notes indicate that the 12 degree mark "will be just disappearing out the timing window" when set for 18 degrees. Since the fly wheel moves clockwise and down when you hand crank the engine, wouldn't the 12 degree mark just be appearing in the window? As I continue to crank the next mark is the UC line. I am confused!

Thanks for any help.

If you are using a timing light and advancing the distributor the timing mark will "back up" is the best way I can describe it. If doing it statically then your analysis is correct regarding the 12 degree mark so if you go past where you want it then reverse direction of rotation.

Generally the No. 1 spark plug wire is located in the position closest to the tab on the bottom edge of the cap. That positions it over the notch in the distributor housing. Doesn't really matter except for some of us that have a dedication to original.

wouldn't the 12 degree mark just be appearing in the window?

When the car is running and the U/C is lined up with the timing pointer, you turn the distributor counter-clockwise to advance the timing, therefore 18 degrees advanced would be when the 12 degree timing mark starts to disappear out of the top of the timing window. Also, since your question pertains to 1931 your post should be in the 1929-31 forum.
