What year is the engine?
If it is a 1955 or later a new design rubber seal can easily be installed. Just drop the pan and rear main bearing cap.
If it is a 1954 or prior you will need to use a rope seal for replacement. The tough job here is replacing the top half with out stretching it out and ruining it.

I have changed the seal top and bottom on my two 216s in recent years with success. I did pull the transmission back and dropped the crank around 1/4". I use picture hanging wire tied on the end to pull it in. I also only use the new style seal sold by best gasket. I believe it is important to get the clearance in the main bearings down to minimums to have success with the seal.

My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .
