I have a Delco Remy Transistor Ignition kit no 1964342 1#U-2100 ,Dad had it on a 62 Impala when it was new ,he had it on for a short time and then put it back in the box where it has been till about a week ago. it has a transistor in a heat sink a special coil and resistor it also used stock points, this has to be one of the first of this type ignition systems .who else have one or heard of it? would like to have a little history on it. I may put it on my 63 Impala.

auto :cool2:

I know it was offered in 64 only on the 409-425 HP set-up, and only a hundred or so cars came with it (never seen one, or even heard of anyone seeing a car with it.). As far as 62's there is nothing in my library mentioning it. Could it be a possible retro-fit kit, offered later on? Is there a number on the coil? The listing in the March 66 Parts Book Transistor Ignition coil is for 64 up and it is embossed with 176-12V. This is pretty interesting. As far as using it I don't know, if there is an external resistor you will need to change the wiring, and needless to say service parts will be an issue if needed. Gene, did you check any late 60's Delco Books for the number? Woody is there a group number on the outside of the box along with the part number? That could be a help!

John-yes I checked my 1960s and early 70s Delco books. It sounds to be a retrofit kit as the factory set-up didn't use points as per my books.

I just reviewed the instruction sheets for this kit and I found a Rev.2-14-64 so it must have been 1964 when he tried this out. He was a TBA distributor at the time and he had all the new toys. The coil is a176 with a sticker stateing ignition coil for transistor ignition.there is an eight page instruction sheets to cover all models[12volt neg. ground] It was packaged in a real neat display box ,must have been for counter sales.the only numbers on the box are 1964342 and on the corner is U-2100 this is the only group number on the box.
