My 29 coupe was grey, however under the grey is a red paint which I assume is primer. Is this correct or was the car originally red?
Thanks

That is red oxide primer and it was used in 1929. My original 1932 has the red oxide primer as well.

I don't know about 1929 but from at least 1934 and up Fisher Body used red primer and Chevrolet used gray. That means the hood and fenders were gray primer and body sheet metal red.

When my car was recently stripped to bare metal there was red oxide on it, and I recall as well using it at the dealership into the mid 60's. To the best of my memory a black primer was then used and I recall a gray being the most recent.
