Follow the shop manual instructions for torquing down the head bolts. Remember to oil the threads also. If rusty run a bottoming tap in each thread hole and vacuum to pull out the rust,

I agree with Chevy Nut. Follow the manual. I have done engines with the thread hole going into the water galley. They must have sealant on threads. I always use permatex #2.

If this is a 40,000 mile 1956 235 engine guarantee it will have excessive oil consumption.

Chevy1937 Permatex #2 is good for that purpose. Down here GM-H produced a special goo for head bolts that go to coolant jacket but it is a hardening type, if disturbed after hardening you must fully clean and reapply the sealant (torque down and forget).

I have never found head bolt "holes" on a 216-235-261 6 Cyl. that extended into the coolant.
First this pccured was the 265 engine in 1955. There the manual states which bolts extended into the coolant and requires a sealer on the threads.
