Hi,
I'm taking delivery of a 1927 AA Capitol on Friday, i have had a read through the workshop manual but am a little unsure how the valve train lubrication works, do you soak the felt pad in the rocker cover and lubricate the rockers or does it occur by misting? and if you oil it how often?

thanks in advance

Allan.

Hi Allan,

Welcome to the VCCA web site! This is the best place in the world to hob knob with kindred vintage Chevy souls.

The Chevy 4 cylinder engines do not pump oil up to the rocker arms. According to the lubrication chart in the manuals, you have to squirt some oil (10-30W) on the rockers and on the felt every 50 miles. The oily felt creates a mist that lubricates the rockers in between the 50-mile service operation.

Don't forget to put a drop of oil on the front bushing on the water pump too. And, give the water pump grease cup a twist at the same time. Use marine grease in this cup, not bearing or chassis grease.

There are a lot discussions about these engines and the vehicles in this area of the web site. To find these discussions, you need to use the Search Function. Using this function is one of the many benefits of belonging to the VCCA. It is well worth the small annual fee.

Cheers, Dean

Don't forget to bring the level of oil up 1/2 way in the two major depressions in the 4-cylinder head. Use 10-30 oil for this purpose.

I read in my 1927/1928 service bulletin that Chev used to ship the cars with oil in the valve pockets.....then stopped. I was not able to find any notice in the service literature about putting oil in those valve pockets for normal operation ???
