Just myself, I use permatex #2 on corners only. I tie the gasket to the pan with some fine thread I swipe from the misses sewing kit. Just through 4 holes. that holds it in place until I get it in place.

i also did that, i used vasilene on my side cover and valve cover gasket (engine side) so if ever took it off wouldnt be stuck as bad on the engine if gasket was little out of whack used wooden dowel pins stuck them in bolt holes put gasket in place then put pan on and pulled a pin put bolt in one by one it worked good for me . now that you have answered my post with one way someone will come back another post saying they use the black am going to wade thru them all and wait to see what Gene says thanks

I have heard many story's about silicone chunks falling off in the engine and clogging oil pump pickup. That's why I only use pematex #2!

For an Oil pan gasket you CAN NOT attach the side gaskets to pan. The side gaskets must be attached to the engine block first and the the end corks installed. The reason for this is the end corks must but up against the side gasket end tabs. I use chassis grease to hold the side gaskets to the block. Permatex can be used but will make the gasket material difficult to remove later. Silicone (RTV) can be used on a gaket but only a very thin costing. It also can be used (just a dab) at the ends of the pan gasket where the gasket meets the end corks.
The very thin coating of RTV sealant on both sides of the push rod cover gasket is a good was to prevent leaks due to the cover sheet metal being distorted.
I have never used a sealer on a rocker arm cover gasket.

Rtv is a good sealer when used correctly but in excess can cause major issues. Depends on the situation where I use it, oil pan only small bit in the corners to fill any differences in shape. If I am doing the complete surface I spread it thin and even. The non hardening permantex aviation (in the plastic bottle with a brush) is good stuff and often use it where coolant is involved or on bolt threads where there is the possibility of oil or coolant weeping along the thread.

It’s been a few years ago since last I looked for it, but NAPA had it back then.

The Indian gasket stuff is still available in the bottle. Check with your local Advance Auto Parts place.
