I did a search on this and nothing came up on the subject. Can anyone tell me if the sticker is supposed to be on the drivers side or on the passenger side of the windshield? I saw an old picture with it on the passenger side. It might have been an English car for all I know. Thanks for any help. Bob

As I recall the Gas Ration Stickers were placed on the lower right passenger side of the windshield.

I'm guessing that as long as the sticker was visible on the windshield it could go anywhere. Click the link below and you will see a picture of my '34 taken in the '40's. The sticker is shown on the driver's side. That's my mother-in-law sitting on the fender.

My dad ran a filling station for a little while right after WW11. I pumped gas until the whole dang thing (attached garage and filling station) burned to the ground. (a leasee for the garage was taking out a gas tank and using a bare bulbed drop light. Bulb shattered and gas vapors did the rest.) Anyway, if my memory is correct the ration decals were on the lower right (passenger) side. I don't know if there were instructions, either verbal or written, as where they should be posted/placed. Because most (it seems) filler caps were located on the right rear fender, it would seem that it would be easier for the attendant to note the ration sticker if it were on that side (right). Just my supposition and foggy memory. Charlie

I agree that lower passenger side was the location of most. We always know that someone will not follow instructions or not read them so will put things where they want.

I agree with the lower right side. During WW 2, I used to hang around the gas station on the highway below our house. The ethyl pump still had a 10 gallon glass container on its top. Several friends of mine would take turns pumping 10 gallons into that glass top with a big lever on the side of the pump.

The service station where I worked all the pumps were the 10 gallon hand pump. The pumps were Ethel, Regular, White gas, and kerosene. Available on the island was an oil can rack for both glass bottles and cans, air and water with a hose that had a "J" shaped end that fit in the radiator neck and a lever to turn on the water. Every stop received a clean windshield, air checked in the tires, oil was checked by the dip-stick, water was checked, and you took any trash the driver had accumulated in his trip. In your spare time you were performing oil changes, lubrication, and checking the level in the transmissions and rear ends. An arriving customer was announced by the bell which was activated by the car running over a special air line.

The location of the sticker depended on the state. In Wisconsin the sticker was placed on the window closest to the gas filler but was illegal to have a sticker on the windshield. The instructions were printed on the back of the sticker. They read "This sticker must be displayed on the vehicle in the location which conforms with state law".

When I bought my 41 in 1979 there was an "A" sticker in the lower right hand side of the windshield.

Wow! What a lot of VERY interesting reply's! It seems that the general consensus would put it on the passenger side of the windshield. So that is where I will put mine. Thanks to all of you who replied. Bob (Lakeland, FL.)

Realize this is a 7 year old post, but seemed like the ideal forum name to ask. I have noticed searching online for the old ration stickers, at the bottom under the A,B,C, etc I see some say "Gasoline ration" and others say "Mileage Ration". I thought these were all for gas ration limits, why would some say "mileage ration"? Is one correct and incorrect(or a bad reproduction)? Thanks for any info!

About 10 yyears ago I did a gas rationing article for the G&D. I went back in my old files and found some information which I am mailing to you. To answer your question the early stickers said gas rationing and late said mileage.
Blackbird supplied me with the info. for the article. I sent you what I found remaning in my files. Sorry not all in one message
