My 59 has a 283 with 4 jet Rochester and it has a flat spot when taking off, worse when cold.

I bought a "Jet" kit but the pump plunger was too big [3/4"] mine is around 1/2"
The book says the Power Valve is probably crook.
Which one is the Power valve??

I'm presuming your '59 has a 4GC and not a Q-jet, and that might also be why your pump plunger doesn't fit. 4GC was the standard GM 4-barrel in the late '50's to early '60's and Quadra-Jet came later.

This page has a good diagram to show what the power valve is and where it's located.

The problem appears solved, I raised the float level and I've since bought the correct kit to install, and she's running well

Great news - isn't it amazing what correct adjustments can do to improve performance?
