We had a big discussion on the spring shackle pins and how to remove them here on the forum a few months ago. You might want to use the search feature to locate the various discussions that we had regarding the spring shackle pins.

OK Thanks. I will look it up.
Another question. Brake shoes. Where do most people go for these? Filling Station? Any other sources?
Thanks again.

"Where do most people go for these?"

Bert,

Parts store brake shoes sold since about 1980 are "organic" (non-asbestos). Asbestos has a higher friction coefficient than that "organic" stuff and complete shoes with asbestos linings and asbestos lining material are on ebay. When I took the "organic" friction (pads and shoes) off my '32 Ford roadster street rod and replaced it with asbestos friction from ebay it was like adding a power booster, and that is not an exaggeration.

Thanks Ray! I will check to see what is available. Did you have to buy complete shoes or just the lining? Rivet them on yourself?

You can purchase just the linings and then rivet them on yourself or have someone do it for you.

Thanks JD. Sounds better than sending everything away to have it done. Any suppliers for linings or just check ebay? Experience with different materials?

Same thing on the brake linings. Search on the forum and you’ll find your answer. The 32 didn’t use a hard molded asbestos shoe but used a woven type material I believe like the 31’, but a quick search will verify.

Your local clutch and brake shop should have the linings available by the foot. Also, McMaster-Carr should have the lining material and you can check eBay as well.

Many of the shoes I have removed from 32 Chevy brake assemblies were of molded material. Most likely they all contained asbestos which was used because of is ability to perform with the heat build up and wear well. The woven linings used today may be equal in stopping power but I do not have any data to verify that. The woven lining is used in industrial applications that require aggressive stopping power under severe high heat applications. It has been adapted for automotive use because of that ability and the discontinuance of asbestos but I do not know if it was ever used as original factory build. Would be nice to know. I have the woven lining on my 32 and it stops well and does not require excessive brake pedal pressure and actually no more than I would apply in my 2009 Silverado.

I contacted Peter about a week ago to let him know that the PM email notice is not working but I didn't receive a response. Haven't seen him on this site lately either.

Regarding brake shoes.
After I discovered Clutch Doctor of North Branch, MN, I quit doing them myself although I'm fully capable.
If it has friction material he does it, does it well, fast and reasonably.
The successor of my machine shop uses him often too.
We've sent some pretty grubby looking things for relining and when they come back they look like new.
