Hi Guys,
Please help. I am trying to pull a hub on my 29 Chevy, been batteling for two days.
I just noticed; gear selected and park brake off, one wheel raised wheel will not turn. ie, differential seems jambed. Surely, this can’t be correct? I can only rotate the raised wheel about 4 inches.
In neutral the raised wheel rotates normally.

Chris

Maybe you should remove the rear differential cover and do an inspection of the gears to find out what is going on,

Front or Rear ?? If Rear
Quote
gear selected and park brake off, one wheel raised wheel will not turn

if it is the rear, and it is in gear you can NOT turn that ONE wheel. even if both are off the ground and car is in gear it would be really hard to turn the wheel. as you are trying to turn the trans and engine since it is in gear (Drive). if it is in neutral and only one wheel is off the ground you can not turn it, IF both are off the ground and car is in neutral then you should be able to turn one forward the other wheel should turn in reverse and vice versa.

and also if rear a hub puller is essential and nice to have !!

With only one wheel raised the driveshaft will turn. If it's in gear it should not turn. With both wheels up off the ground the wheels will turn.

Bears,
I am sure it will be fine, but I am still batteling to get the hub off. Just broke the second puller.
The car has been going fine, except for a worn axle taper which causes the hub to sit too deep and therefor just touches the backplate at times.
I was so engrossed trying to pull the hub that the ‘locked’ diff nearly gave me a heart attack.
I be getting a more, better, bigger, different puller and will report back when it is done.
I am sure the diff is fine, it was only a brain fart which made me run to the forum before thinking.

Just don't stand in front of it. I had one like that and when I finally got a good puller and added a little heat it flew off and would of hurt me if I didn't happen to be to the side.

The Hub puller I have is like this one:
[Linked Image from images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com]

It is extreme duty, works great thought. snagged it off ebay years ago for a steal. came in a steel case, with all parts. It is HEAVY !!

Yep,
That is what I was looking for. I saw them in local catalogues but they seem to be out of stock. I made my own in the shape of a top hat, with six bolt holes around the rim and a 16mm bolt going through the top. Works great.

I found the same one but much older and much more used at an old car show and flea market in NY last year.gave $15 for it and would have payed more. It’s a life saver for sure.
