My doctor (a street rodder) mentioned to me today that if I wanted it he has a '58, 283ci vette block and crank etc, but doesn't have the original heads for it (has some 194 fuelie head instead of the 202?).

I don't have a need for another motor right now, but I don't think I will run across another one like this in the future when I might need a motor. Plus it is a cool motor to rebuild and I would hate to see it 'lost' to one of his street rod friends who might put it in a Furd. Maybe I can find something that needs this motor...

I am going to ask him for the numbers from the motor and the parts and post them here so we will know exactly what he has.

Before my next appointment (Friday) I was hopping that you guys (who know such things) would tell me about how much the motor is worth and if it is something that should be pursued.

Sorry if the information is so limited; but I sort of got excited about the prospect of getting a '58 Vette motor...

Thanks in advance...Gator

Gator, Maybe you need to go to the doctor more often! (Are you on Medicare yet?), just don't let on that the Vette engine is all that is wrong with you!

chevy chevy Hi Gator, + Mr. .....(funny guy) Mack. My friend does have info about this "STUFF". Here is his reply thusfar. Copy / Paste / thingadoodle, ect. ect.....QUOTE: Hello Don, Yes the Vette engine is worth some $$$$$$$. Even more if
it’s a rare FI unit. The FI heads are worth some coin as well. The
guy that’s going to pay the biggest buck for the engine is some one
looking for a proper Casting # and date code. In general parts
manufactured within 3 months of the cars production will be accepted
at Vette tech meets. AS always the case with Vetts, it’s all in the
numbers. Keep me updated. ENDQUOTE. chevy chevy Mmmmmm.....keep "US" updated there please Gator! Thanks guys......Don R. out of Man.

Went back to him Friday and I am going to get the numbers to post here ASAP. Another appointment Monday (I blew out a low disk in my back about 10 days ago).

I sure would like to see it in use, like in a '58 Vette.

Does your friend or anyone on Chatter know how much these items might be worth? Need to know so I can maybe "make a deal".

OK, my doctor got me the numbers today so I will post them for you guys to tell me what they mean.

283 block; 3849852.

(He said that the first '3' might be an '8' and the '9' might be an '8' Hard to tell the 9, 8 and 3 apart.)

Heads: 3782461, 3890462

So what does he have here and what do you think they are worth?

Thanks, Gator

The 3849852 block casting number is way too new for a 1958.In one place I found it listed for 1957-66.May be a parts dept. replacement engine or was taken from a 1966 car with a 283.

The 1958 engine would have had a 3737739 casting number I believe.

The 3782461 head fits 1964-67 327 (some)

The 3890462 head fits 1966-67 302,327, and 350 engines (some)

Chevgene, in your opinion what he has (3849852)then is a replacement 283 block for any Chevy between '57-'66?

How would this motor be considered by the VCCA in judging?

reborn55, I will ask him about the pad numbers, got another appointment Wed.

Thanks

often the casting numbers are not checked for VCCA judging as they are not easily seen with the engine in the chassis. The numbers stamped in the pad (front of right head - at head gasket area) is usually whats checked. They identify what year, engine type and further info.I have heard of people grinding off the existing letter-number combination and restamping the correct numbers for their car.

Thanks tom32, your site shows:

...#.............ci.....yrs....mains
3849852....283...57-66...2

Does this mean this block could have been in any model Chevy from 1957 to 1966?

Thanks

My doctor is tubing down a local river (spring fed) so I have not been able to get additional numbers.

What ballpark price would you guys put on a block like this?
