THE GM PARTS MANUAL shows ALL freeze plugs the same size for '54 to '57 6 cylinder.
Part # 3704158 and size is 2 1/8".

tHE FREEZE PLUGS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BLOCK ARE 1 5/8" CUP TYPE.
tHE CAM SHAFT PLUGS, FRONT AND REAR OF THE BLOCK FOR 1954 AND UP ARE 2 1/8"
....were 2 " prior to 1954.
tHE LARGER SIZE DUE TO THE HIGHER LOBES ON THE 1954 AND UP CAMS.

Gene, how many plugs are in the rear of the block? Is there one for the cam and another freeze plug? My parts book for 29-55 after the block listing has 37-55 left side block (cup type) (1-5/8in.) front and rear in block (2 in.) 3835121 (welch type) The cam plug is listed in group .553 37-53 all (2 in.) 838127 (type?) The 2-1/8" for 54-55 cam plug list 3704158. AS listed there are two different 2" plugs-one specified for the 37-53 cam and the other 37-55 front and rear of the block. It appears there is a 1-5/8" cup type plug at the left rear SIDE of the block and two 2" plugs one ? type and one welch for 37-53 . The 54-55 having one 2" plug and one 2-1/8" plug(cam) in the rear. If I sound confused it's because I am but I know you can enlighten me out.

To be honest I can't remember what is on the back of the block other than the cam plugs.

Well if I get real curious I do have an an engine I could pull the f/w housing off of. It's a PG engine but the block should be the same on the rear.
