The "iron" distributor gear was used on all distributors through 1953. The part # was 1865180. It was later discontinued and Chevrolet sold just the steel gear......just like all 1940 and up 6 cylinder distributors were discontinued and replaced by a 1955-1962 fits all distributor.

In my post about using my 37 Dist. you stated the 37 steel gear might hurt the cam . I have a 1929425 gear new in the box it is steel. Sellers on ebay have the 1865180 they say it is steel . Sellers also list 53 to 55 for tach drive don't know what would be different . 1929578, 1921074,1941237, all these numbers need to make sure I get the right one. The first time. On the 53 to 55 nothing on the material as most do not.

I am sure the Ebay sellers haveno idea what the gear is made from. The number I gave you is steel according to the parts book and 1929578. for the 1954 and up camshaft, is a cast iron.

Just be aware that the 1937 distributor mechanical advance curve is incorrect for a later engine and the 235 engines used much lese advance than the 216.

I have taken 2 dist. apart one came with my 54 engine the other from a 216 . Was going to use the shaft and advance from the 54 in the 216 housing . When I filed the ends off of the pins to remove the gears you can tell the steel from cast iron, when file touches the steel gear it slides across it, it cuts the cast. I would like to put a new gear on it the used one has some wear. The 216 is steel the 54 is cast.
