My axle came out of the rear end. Any suggestions how I could move her, she is partly on the sidewalk . The axle will not go back into rear end. Any suggestions to get the axle back in so I can move her

The axle probably broke and that allowed it to pull out. Less common is for the "C" lock to drop out and the axle pull out. You can jack that wheel off the ground and push it back in (car still will not drive) but the brake shoes a are probably preventing the axle from going back in place.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that.
On a positive note, it's probably better that it didn't happen while at speed on the road.
Gene's idea sounds good...push the axle back in and push/pull the car into a better place.
Time to take that axle apart and see what else needs to be replaced.

Gene, I'm starting to conclude you know a lot. LOL. You are spot on, I had to tilt the axle up, adjust the pads in and the shaft went back in. Thankfully my neighbors, Jerry and Brad(Marine) helped me push my 38 into the garage where she is safe and secure. My plans are to upgrade the gears so I can take my 38 on the highway. Keep you posted and thanks Gene for you continued expertise. Michael

If your car is a Master (not a Master Deluxe) it already has the "highway" gears. When the differential cover is removed the ratio and part numbers will be stamped on the ring gear.To replace the axle the pinion and axle gears must be removed but the ring gear and pinion remain in place I have had dealership experiance since 1950 but didn't think I would be using it 68 years later.

maybe my 38 is not a master deluxe, but just had a master deluxe trim installed by previous owner. My engine is winding out at 55 mph. I would like to put less stress on the engine and be able to comfortably cruise at 60. -The difficulty getting the axle back in was the need to tilt the inserted end up, then the brakes became and issue. I simply adjusted the brakes in and the hub slipped over. -Time to do research into my options Thanks

A Master will have a solid front axle and leaf springs. A Master Deluxe will have the big enclosed knee-action units. If it is a Master Deluxe, yes, it is a good time to swap out the complete rear end.

Note that the axle shafts normally do not come with the rear end assembly. You get the drive shaft, torque tube abd housing that fits into the banjo housing, If you do find/get an axle it must be from a 1938 or 1939, the axles for 1937 are shorter.
