I am on the aaca forum and somebody suggested that the 490 and FB heads of 1922 are identical. Is that at all possible?

I find it hard to believe.

thanks!

490 head is single port exhaust and FB head is three port exhaust. The heads have the same head bolt pattern as far as I know.

Yes, the head bolt pattern is the same. For example, the Filling Station sells a new head gasket that works for 1916-1928.

Although I have not done this, a lot of other folks put newer heads on older engines. The single exhaust port heads are prone to cracking and when they did, a lot were replaced with the dual exhaust port '28 heads.

I have heard that the push rods are not the same length for all the 4-cylinder engines. There might be other factors to consider also.

This topic would probably get more opinions in the Speedster forum, since they modify the 4 bangers for speed and power. Back in the day, the hot rodders used to put a 1923 three port OLDS head on the Chevy blocks.

Cheers, Dean
