I have a 350 engine (1972 block) with I don't know what year AC Delco HEI distributor. The problem I'am having, is that about every 10 starts the engine will start just fine, then on about the 11th try I get no spark at all. All I have to do to get it started again is to take off the distributor cap and bend up the prong on the rotor and it will start right up. I do not have a condenser at all, could this be my problem? too much heat on the rotor prong? If so where would I hook the condenser to? Any help would be great, this problem is driving me crazy. This problem has been on going every since I bought the car, and yes I have replaced all the components in the Distributor. HELP.

If you've replaced all the distributor parts, about the only thing left is the ignition switch, ignition relay(if installed) and associated wiring. It is possible for the starter to drag the voltage down far enough that the ignition won't fire, so check battery connections.

Many years ago the early HEI distributors had coil problems. If I remember correctly there are two, one on top and the other below the plate. The one below the plate is likely the problem with the intermittent problems. Had it happen several time to me and my buddies until we replaced the coils.

Hey Chipper, thanks for the reply. I really didn't know there was any thing below the plate. What I did was borrow another distributor from a friend and so far no problems. I will look into the coil under the plate. Thanks for your input too George I will check the battery connections and that ignition switch. Thank you both. Dick
