Do the 49-54 models use the same Left hand drive steering boxes?

NO. The 1949-1952 use the same box amd the 1953-1954 use the same box. The 1949 and early 1950 have a faster steering ratio than then the late 1950-1952 for easier steering. X cast into top of housing on late. 1953-1954 has improved needle bearing instead of bushings for pitman shaft . The 1953-1954 will work in an earlier model but the complete gear and steering column must be used.

Depends on what you call better. Owners of 1949 and early 1950 cars complained of hard steering (steering wheel difficult to move when parking, etc.) They were used to the very easy steering 1939-1948 models that had less weight on the front wheels and higher pressue tires. The problem got even worse in 1950, Power Glide cars that had another 150 pounds on the front wheels. The less steering effort was gained by changing the steering gear ratio. The early gear required 4 turns from lock to lock and the late 4 1/2 turns....figures are not quite accurate.
