How do align and set the timing with the crank gear and cam gear for a 27 Chevy? Seems as though I read a while back that the 27 cam gears were stamped incorrectly. It is a fiber gear.

As soon as you qualify, search for, "School is in Session. That school covers just about everything about building 4-cylinder engines. You need to read it.

Welcome to the web site, tipsy! The first thing you need is a copy of the original repair manual. Many vendors, like the Filling Station, sell reprints. You'll find the answer to your timing question in that book. The picture in the book is a little misleading, but the verbal description is correct.

Ray's book is over 250 pages!. He documented his rebuild of a 1928 engine, with step-by-step discussions and lots of pictures. Gaining access to this one item is worth the minor cost of joining the club.

There was a service bulletin sent out by Chevrolet describing that the cam gear was stamped incorrectly for the 27 truck. So what is in the manual really does not help, Been working on this and other vehicles for about 40 years and this is the first time I have encountered this problem

Forget the stamping. Set the cam gear so the intake valve ,on cylinder one, begin to open when the piston has traveled 1/16 inch on its downward stoke
