Chev Gene, PDX Joe or whoever has a minute to help.....
I'm looking at a 56 convertible with the following numbers.
Cowl Tag:
Style: N956 1067DTX
Body #: L 14644
Trim: 607 (Light Blue/Dark Blue)
Paint: 707: (Nassau Blue/India Ivory)
Number on engine on passenger side by front of head: 0389199 F56F
I don't know the first thing about deciphering the "style" number. Please help.
I presume "L" means Lansing on the Body number. Weren't all convertibles assembled in Lansing?? Baltimore too?? Anyway, isn't "L" for Lansing??
Does 14644 really mean 14644 or did the numbers start at 1001 or 10,001?? If they started at 1001, wouldn't this one be number 13643 out of about 41k total convertible production in 1956??
Am I correct about Trim and Paint codes??
RE the engine number: I thought the last letter would be X or Y or Z as in 3 speed, or Power Glide, or 3 speed overdrive. No??
Anyway, Please help with correct info and confirmation with what I think I know.
Thanks so much.
Bill.

Style: N956 1067DTX : N9 = ?; 56 = model year; 1067DTX Fisher number = Chevy No. 2434, convertible.
Body #: L 14644 : L = Lansing, MI; 14,644th vehicle assembled there that year.
Trim: 607 (Light Blue/Dark Blue) : 607 = Medium blue / Light blue imitation leather
Paint: 707: (Nassau Blue/India Ivory) correct.
There is a VIN number on the driver door jamb. If it has a V first it was a V8, Next letter A=150, B=210, C=Bel Air, D=Sedan Delivery. Yours will have "L" after 56. Yours probably is "CHEVROLET VC56L014644".

F56F is a 1956 265 2 barrel Power Glide passenger car engine made in Flint. L is for Lansing. All convertible bodies were made in Lansing but the car would have been assembled some where else.No cars were assembled in Lansing - the line was in Flint.Could have been assembled in any plant.Need serial number for that. Body sequence numbers began with #1.

We will need the VIN number as PDX stated on the inside of the driver door. VC56L014644 would be a Van Nuys, Ca. assembly plant vehicle not Lansing. The L for the body # is Lansing. Let us know 42 Bill

The VIN, located inside the driver's door, is VC56A073054.
Another question. The VIN "tag" is actually lower, in the front door jam area. I thought it would be on the "A" pillar, up by the windshild, so to speak. Like where it is on my '54 Sport Coupe. The question: when did they start being placed lower, in the door jam - by the courtesy light switch??
Thanks all.
Bill.

That is the correct position for the tag on most "non-post" bodies. VC = 8 cyl. Bel Air 56 = year of car A = Atlanta assembly plant

For what it's worth, I went ahead and purchased the car a few weeks back.
I understand it's pretty unusual for a Bel Air Convertible to have a 3 speed stick shift. No OD. Just the 3 speed.
The car suits me just fine. I like the sound of the dual exhaust when running thru the gears.

Actually the 3 speed with no O/D was more common around here tha the O/D cars. There is nothing like the sound of the V-8 engine and the whine of the 3 speed tranny....sound so much better than when coupled to a 6 cyl. Sounds like a "neat" car.

Thanks Gene. It DOES sound good and it IS a neat car. It may be interesting to note, the good friend I bought it from had it for three years.(He and I and my wife all went to grade school and high school together altho he's 2 years younger than we are) He admits he didn't put 300 miles on it in those three years he had it. Accordingly there are some "no driving" issues with the car. We'll be working on them as we go along. He!l, we've already driven it to the coast (90 miles or so one way) and 5-6 cruise-in's, just to run errands, etc. and put around 600 miles on it in the 4-5 weeks we've had it. We don't believe in just letting them sit in the garage. Especially a nice '56 Bel Air convertible - and - especially when the sun is out! Holy Smokes! Let's not "waste" those opportunities. Especially in Oregon!!! HA! Bill.

Bill, It seems as if you may have struck the Mother Lode, I have always thought the 56 was the darling of the tri-5s and that color combo is great, I bet those duals sound great with the top down too! And yes they were ment to be driven!

Mack,
What the heck is going on anyway????????
Here I am agreeing with YOU again.
HA!!
I sure hope Skippy doesn't see this agreeing stuff. It might upset his equilibrium or drive him to drink or some other awful thing.
Take care Mack and thanks for the nice comments.
Bill.

Good one. Especially about the one-liners!! I do hope he finds some new ones. Instead of just re-cycling the old ones!
Take care..........
