Hello everyone. Thanks for your excellent help so far. I have a problem now with getting the car moving. Every time I start to drive it it stalls out and dies. It won’t start again for a few minutes. I am think this might be a fuel problem. I have cleaned the vacuum tank and been through the carb. I am wondering what the float level setting is best set at and if there is something I might have missed in the carb?

I have been through the timing. To me there is only one way the distributor will go in and get the points to just start opening when the spark is retarded. I just finished putting the new baffle in the water pump and now the overheating has stopped. So I am thinking my proble is not timing or it might still be over heating.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Usually two situations cause these two problems.

A. Most likely it is a problem with the fuel. Disconnect the fitting under the vacuum tank. Turn on the valve and see if you get a strong flow of fuel. If not, fuel flow is your problem.

B. The second item is weak spark. You have enough spark to make the engine run, but develops a lack of strong spark that produces poor power. 1st thing is to change the condenser with a fresh new one. No change in operation, then change the coil. Check every connection from the ignition switch to the points.

Those two ideas will keep you busy for a while.

I will check the fuel. I have a new coil and condenser. I have removed the ignition switch, cleaned all the contacts, and replaced it. There was no current to the coil before I did that. Now there is. Thanks

It is the fuel supply. When I take the top off the vacuum tank it runs great. Now to determine if the vacuum tank is the problem or the fuel tank.

I have fuel at a sufficient rate now as I finally figured out the two valves at the top of the vacuum tank, one was stuck open so neither would close when the float rose to the top.

It runs a lot better but there is still something wrong as to me it lacks power. I live in a hilly area so I know there is no way it will pull these hills without some more work.

I have done the following: ignition switch rebuilt, new coil, new condenser, cleaned the vacuum tank, cleaned the fuel tank, retimed it so that the rotor points to the notch on the right front of the distributor as number one tower, set the points, checked all spark plug wires for resistance, and rebuilt the water pump (no heating now). Thanks

Happy new year every one. I have the 1926 Chevy running good I believe but may still have issues I am not aware of. My main issue now is hills. I live in a very hilly area. Getting up my drive has proven to be a problem. I make it about half the time to the road. I have a steep drive probably a 15 foot rise in about 50 feet. I have to make a 120 degree turn before starting up. I get it into second at the turn and have to shift down to first. I make it up to the road about 50 percent of the time. The other times the engine will die in first.
I ran a compression test last week. The spec I believe is about 60 lbs. I get 50 to 60 lbs. So I think that is ok. As you can see I from my prior posts I have done a lot to this engine. Our family is the second owner and to our knowledge all that has ever been done to the engine is my father ground the valves.
Does anyone have any experience with these cars on hills? Once I have the road It
takes the hills good as long as I have a run at them.

Experiment with the spark setting. What results did you notice?

I did not noticed much difference. I went in yesterday to the intake manifold and made sure the inserts were there for airflow. They were. I think now I am going to have to wait for spring to check out much more as winter is here.

Thanks to Chip we have the 26 taking the hills now. It was timing. I was not aware of the feature that you could rotate the cam in the distributor on the shaft. A new thing to me. Thanks again.
