What does the freewheel option do? Mine is pulled out and it appears the cable is frozen.

When the free wheeling is in use it disconnects the engine from the drive train when you take your foot off the gas pedal. In other words it would be like depressing the clutch any time the engine is not pulling. This makes it dangerous for old cars as there is no engine breaking to help to to stop or slow down.

Hmmm. The knob on my car is pushed all the way in and it definitely does NOT free wheel. There was a note that came with the car saying not to mess with the Freewheeling knob.
I have not investigated it any further.
I suppose freewheeling was handy for going down long downhill stretches when barking wasn't going to be needed. I did notice that long engine braked decell stretches load up the motor on fuel, a bit.

After these became unpopular for the reasons mentioned, also illegal to supply on new cars in most states, many owners wired them such that they could not be activated, knob in or knob out. I have a 1933 Plymouth that is wired to disable this. When I say wired I mean mechanically wired as these are not electrically activated.
