I have been told several different things about the original '57 locking gas cap.

Can anyone describe the correct cap for me? Among other things does it have a red strip, where? Around the cap base or across the cap top? Part number? Was this cap only used in ’57? Is there a grove around the base?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

There are three rings around the base -and two groves. The cap is very small in diameter. The door for the key is about the size of a quarter and has a raised rib on it for swinging the door around so the key can be inserted...no red ring.

Thanks guys.

No red strip. I was afraid of that...

What year is this one for? If it is even a Chevy cap, maybe someone put it in the wrong box?.

cap here.

Thanks Don, I would like some pictures of the right one, sent you a private message.

Looking at the color of the box its for a much newer model. The 1957 box would have been tan (natural) color with green trim and orange lettering.

Not sure about the one In the picture, But I have been told that there Is a gas cap for 55 and 56 chevys that has a red stripe on It. In 57 they had no stripe on the gas cap as far as being correct for 57. chevy

The reproduction locking gas caps which they say are for '57 (red strip) don't look like this red strip one either.

repro cap

What do you guys think an original one should sell for?

Thanks for the help.

The 1955 locking cap is rather large in diameter. It has two ears on the top to assist in turning and the outter edge has serations for gripping.I have a new one.

The 1956 cap was made smaller to git in the opening behind the tail lamp.

The 1957 cap made still smaller to fit in the pocket behind the fin moulding. If I remember correctly it did not turn.Just pushes on to lock and pulls straight off when unlocked. That why it has no grippers for turning. That may have been the first cap to go on in that manner.

That red stripe cap if much newer...didn't bother to look ahead for application but is sure incorrect for a 1957.

I would guess a new - in the box - correct 1957 cap would go for at least $100.00 or more.

Louie,

I'd say that cap is a "generic" after-market type item. "Fits" 55-56-57. I don't believe there's a chance it's a genuine Chevy part. Any year.....

I'd think a real (57) one would cost at least $100. Likely more.

Sometime when you're sitting down you could ask Don what he wants for his "spare" one......

Bill.

I think for Louie, I would sell my extra one for $90.00 to him, And even bring It to Grand Junction and save him shipping charges. I would say that would be a fair price on a hard to find locking NOS 1957 gas cap. chevy

Thank you very much Don, I will send you a private message about your spare cap.

By the way the first ebay link red strip cap w/Chevy box has this part number, group # on box 3.028, I'm sure Gene can figure out if it is for any of our cars.

Hope someone here can use it.

I could tell you what the cap should fit but would need the part (accessory) number. All gas caps are in group 3.028.

Thanks Gene, that is all the information the seller had about the cap, a group part number on the box.

It sure does look a lot different than the repros that are for sale.

Could it is an original cap for '55 or '56?
