Hi. I have a 490 engine which has been used as a drive unit for a saw or pump or something. I want to belive this is an 1923 or 1924 engine as there are an oil dipstick instead of the level valves on the oil pan as of earlier engines. The head is also of later design with valve adjustment on the rocker arms. The plan is to install this in my 1924 Sedan where I presently have an older engine, probably 1918 or 1919. Also the reason is the starter ring has a few broken teeth whereas the static has a good flywheel.
The numbers on the older casting is 8 9 18 - casting date sept 1918? Also 887 F U P C O?
The numbers on the static is L 14 3 - I do not belive it is a 1914 casting?
The numbers on the head is H 6 5 - ?
Anyone have a comment on this?
Also what is the basic cylinder diam?

Olle it sounds like you have a 1924 engine. L-14-3 would be December 14, 1923. H-6-5 would be August 6, 1925. So you have a later head. A 1924 engine would have the oil pump mounted behind the generator and distributor. A '23 oil pump would be mounted in front of the generator. The basic cylinder diameter is 3 11/16".
