I was out driving my 38 Master yesterday and the brakes failed. The left rear wheel cylinder failed. Two years ago I rebuilt all four wheels cylinders using new kits. So tonight I took apart the failed wheel cylinder. It turned out that one of the seal cups disintegrated and went partially into solution. It even form a rubber film or ring on the outside edge of the piston. I looked inside both cups and they were labeled differently. The failed cup said Lockheed Wagner, made in the USA. So I am assuming that it was a very old cup that ended up in the kit. I will now have to replace all the wheels cylinders in which I used the kits.

i used to go to the local NAPA store and purchase just the rubber cups. They go just by size to fit millions of cars of all makes.

NAPA Canada still lists a handful of parts for a 1938 Chevrolet including the wheel and master cylinder kits. They also had brass shim kits, plugs, points, condensers, coils, fuel pumps, brake shoes off the top of my head. They have an online lookup.

I found it a quite surprising that a kit from a legitimate outfit would contain a cup that was different from the rest and probably very old. I know that Lockheed Wagner was a big name in the past but I would think, long past. Also the nature of the failure was intriguing, with the edge of the cup disintegrating and some of it apparently forming a solution with the brake fluid.

It could have been a customer return where the customer, for whatever reason, replaced the cup. Then returned the kit. I have seen lots of strange things happen in the parts business.
