Does any one know if the 1955 Chevrolet came with a brass tag attached to the differential indicating the G.M. gear ratio? or a part number?

There was no brass tag.The code was stamped into the housing.Right side-front between 8 0'clock and 10 o'clock stud...center section housing.

Chev Nut: Going back to the Jan 26th post about the 1955 differential stamping on a 3.55 gears. Can you tell me what the code would be such as (CVX or a CKV) on the 3.55 Non-Posi. Thanks

The stamped numbers that identify the ratio in 1955 and 1956 are- 3.70 is AA or BA, 3.55 is AB or BB, and 4.11 is AC or BC.The A axles were made in Detroit and the B in Buffalo.Any additional letters would indicate date made.1957-58 used the same letters for non-posi.1957 was the first year for posi. In 1955-56 the casting number (raised numbers) on the housing were 3707306.1957-58 was 3725899.The housing from a 1964 could be used in a 1955 and were frequently change around.I don't see the letters you posted anywhere up thru 1964.
