Hey Y'all. I'm new to these forums and joined to get help with an old Chevrolet I am thinking about getting. The owner says it is a 1928 4-dr sedan but some folks that have seen pictures say it is a 27. So, how do I tell for sure? Would the trim tag on the firewall tell me? It says Job No 7240 and body No N862. I don't know how to post pictures but I have several of the car or what's left of it.

Job no. 7240 is a 5-passenger Landau Sedan 1927

N862 is a body made by Fisher in Norwood.

Check the engine and see if it has one exhaust port or two.

There are two exhaust ports, one on either side of the distributor. I can't figure out how to post a picture. Do I have to be a VCCA member to be able to post one?

Yes, and a few more posts.

You have a 2-port 1928 head.

If you like you could gather EVERY number and letter on your block and head and post them here. We will decipher them for you so you can post them in a note-book or back pages of your OM.

Thanks for the help. This car is for sale locally and I am thinking about getting it. It has been sitting for many years and is in poor condition as far as the wood goes. The frame and metal is in better shape. If I can get it for a good price I will be bugging Y'all for a lot of help.

Welcome to chatter.
When you can post any numbers you can find on here as there is nearly always someone that can decipher them and advise you of the manufacture plant and date. With this information you will find it makes it easier to locate the correct parts.

Phil, You can LINK to any photos on chat as a NON-member. That means that the photo needs to be hosted somewhere else.

If you want to upload photos, then you need to join the VCCA ($40) and you'll have full permissions for posting photos.

Clean the block and head and look for numbers cast in or stamped.

I called the owner today and after some discussion I asked him to give me a price for the car but he just said to make him and offer. Not expecting him to accept it I offered him $500 and he said OK.
So, I have to get my chain saw running before I go get it. I only have one small tree to cut down but there will still be about 150 feet from that point to the car. It's on level ground so I hope I can roll it close enough to hook the winch to it.
I'll be bugging you all for help once I get it home.

I picked the car up yesterday. The numbers I can find in addition to the cowl tag are as follows:
On the passenger side of the block in a raised pad are the stamped numbers 4557198
Below that in raised cast numbers are 348532
Below that is a cast bowtie emblem followed by 18
Below that is E 29 8
On the exhaust manifold are the numbers 348571

On the passenger side of the front seat is a tag that reads:
Chevrolet (in a bowtie emblem)
Manufactured by
Chevrolet Motor Company
Division of General Motors Company
When writing mention
Model CAPITOL
Car Number 9AA11150

Where would I find the numbers on the head?

The number E 29 8 is May 29, 1928 Therefore a 1928 block.

CAPITOL = 1927

9AA11150 = Norwood 1927 and a number that indicated the car was assembled in February 1927

Remove the valve cover and look from one end to the other and you will find a casting number and a date code. As the 1927 has a 28 block the head would be suspicious also so we need either the date code or how many exhaust outlets.

For your fun information lift the front seat cushion and facing the front of the car and on the back side of the seat riser will be some information burned into the front riser board. You should find something like Job no. 72XX This will tell us where built and the body type.

I suspect we have a 1927 vehicle with a 1928 engine transplant.

The motor has two exhaust ports and the cowl trim tag reads
Job # 7240
Body # N862
I will look at the seat riser tomorrow if I get home before dark. I'll also try to get the valve cover pulled before Friday as I am taking the car to the Perry, Ga. swap meet.
