I own a 1953 Chevy 3100 pickup. The fuel tank has been replaced and new gauges were installed. The fuel gauge does not register. When I turn the ignition key on, the gauge moves only a small distance. I removed the sendor and tested it outside of the truck. The float moves freely and the gauge then registers. When I put the sendor back into the tank, the gauge does not register.
Is there a short or ground issue I am missing?
Thanks.

Welcome to Chatter. I am not sure about your vehicle but check all electrical connectionsat the guage and that the guage body has clean contacts with the mounting, clean all contacts at the sender end and if the tank earth is doubtful connect an extra earth from the sender body to Chassis. Also check that the float does actually float on fuel. Tony

Do you have to lower the fuel tank to get to the sending unit? If you can disconnect the wire on the sending unit what happens to the gage with the system is on? Then what happens with the wire going to the sending unit is shorted to ground? Make sure the tank is grounded to the frame when installed.

Thanks Andy. I'll double check the ground and add another to the frame as I can't really see where the ground goes.
Appreciate your input.
