I am restoring a 1940 Canadian Pontiac, which in my opinion is a Chevrolet with a Pontiac dress on it. I would like to install a vacuum shift unit on it, the way the car was originally equipped. I am a newbie on this site, so perhaps someone has already addressed this, but I am looking for information on how to disassemble the cylinder and renew the piston seals etc. My understanding is that these cylinders were all the same from 1939 to 1948 thanks

1939 is all by itself. 1940-48 are interchangeable. A repair manual for the car you are working on is mandatory.

I've got the original shop manual. It shows lots of exterior pictures of the units, but indicates it is a "Delco Serviceable" component, which usually means that back in the day, GM did the servicing, and discouraged mechanics from doing so. It looks to me like the cylinder is riveted on the aluminum end plate. I could start hacking but thought someone else has opened these up and should be able to tell me something.

Chevrolet did not offer any internal parts of the cylinder.

Use the instructions in the repair manual and after a good cleaning and proper adjustment you should have a very serviceable vacuum unit.

Welcome Manitouc!
Yep, depending on the model, you likely have a Chevy made to look like a USA Pontiac. The Canadian manual tends to be one of the better source of info on these but it's also useful to pick up a copy of the USA Chevy manuals for your model year.
I'm about 5 hours west of you with a 1938.

Tim, Yes I have the original Canadian Pontiac Parts Manual as well as the Chevrolet Shop Manual. The Chev manual certainly does fill in the gaps. Old timers have told me these shift units were troublesome. I think in the day, if they were not understood, mechanics shy'ed away from them, hence the movement to take them out. At this point I am just hoping I can find a better unit.

Manitouc-I have a 42 Chevy and want to change back to vacuum shift. Mine was removed and a conversion kit installed before I owned the car. Do you know if the linkage shift rods on the conversion kit are the same as what was on the car with the vacuum shift. I am trying to figure out what is needed to change back to vacuum other than the cylinder itself.

Curtis, I believe the linkage shift rods are different, as I have seen guys looking for the rods. The pictures I have seen of the rods indicate they are not too complex to make. As far as what else is needed, I am in the same boat as you and trying to acquire whatever is needed. If you know of anyone possessing a good cylinder for sale, let me know. Grant Jones
