I have been reading up on the camshaft thrust spacer. I had a new NOS spacer which I installed on my 1940 216. I see that the only replacement commonly available now is the plate with a separate ring. I am having a difficult time imagining how the ring provides for the correct clearance. Could somebody please explain this to me.

The inner ring is about .003" thicker than the actual retainer. This allows the retiner to have aboutt .003" clearence when installed. Much easier than pressing on the gear and hoping you don't go too far.

So I think I understand now. The gear center get pushed up against the ring and it acts as a precision spacer. Does this updated part work for the camshafts going back to 1937?

This "invention" was new in 1953 and at that point the new and improved version can be used on any from 1937 and up and Chevrolet discontinued the one piece version.

I have one of the new pieces mounted on a camshaft that is sitting in my office if you'd like a picture. It makes a lot of sense once you see it installed.

Tim, I think I understand it now. The gear center is pushed against the ring and the ring against the front of the first cam journal. The hole in the plate is larger and it has just the correct clearance. The old setup was a bit of an adventure.

The 1 piece retainers were a curse to fit, often would end up with not enough clearance. Tony
