Hi, I recently bought an ethanol safe diaphragm for my stock fuel pump. Before I remove the pump I would ask how the hard parts are detached from the old diaphragm to use on the new one. A nos one in a kit that I was planning to upgrade first before removing the pump looks bonded to the material someway. Tips please and thanks.

Hello Franklin, I took my pump apart for a check and cleaning. The diaphragm is riveted to the actuating shaft and can not be readily seperated. It is not like the previous models where the diaphragm bolts together. Look in your owners manual for a description of how the actuating shaft unhooks from the actuating arm/cam shaft follower.

If the diaphragm is crimped to the shaft it still can be replaced. Carefully grind the crimp to the washer level and tap the shaft off. To reassemble center drill and tap a small hole in the end of the shaft. Then install the washers in the same order as removed. Sandwich the diaphragm between the washers. Install a small machine screw with some red Loctite (nearly permanent type). Probably you will need a small flat washer under the screw head. Install back into the pump. I have done several that way with no later problems.

I have done the same procedure as Chipper on several pumps and it is not that difficult to do if you have a lathe or a drill press along with a tap & die set.

Thanks guys, I guess that is what the counterman at the Filling Station meant when he said they can be taken apart easily. I will do it as described.

I also did the same thing as Clipper.

Makes it easier then next time you need to replace the diaphragm.
