Is there such a thing as a timing light that will operate off the 6V battery? I could position another car with a 12V battery near by, but hoping for a simpler solution. Thanks

Yep, a second 12v battery source works with a 12v light. Basic 6v timing lights go cheap on ebay and have that nice vintage look.

I've used a regular 12v timing light on 6v and it works OK. The light isn't as bright but the operation is normal. Having said that I don't use a timing light these days. The timing spec was set for 50 octane gas so to get max out of your engine you'll have to advance the timing a lot over the spec anyway. I set the octane selector on 0 then time to max smooth idle & use the octane selector for any fine tuning if necessary. Max smooth idle rarely needs any additional adjustment for me.

Thanks!
Octane selector? Brought this '31 home about a week ago, and 30+ years earlier than any other car I've owned, so a lot still to learn.

There is timing details for 1931's in the 1929-1932 forum. the timing and spark plug gaps can be increased from factory setting to obtain the best performance from a 1931 engine.
