I have been experiencing a problem with my shifter lately.
Trouble is the shifter sometimes wants to stay in the reverse-first gear mode ratherthanmove to 2nd 3rd mode even though the column shifter has moved. So sometimes the transmission shifts from 1st to reverse at speed rather than go into 2nd.
Appreciate any thoughts on where I should begin.

ggvette.....I`ve messed with my shifter a number of times and from what you said , the first thought is the linkage and grommets . If there is looseness in any of the connections it will cause you grief. New rubber grommets are available and you may need to disconnect the shifter rods and make minor adjustments . For me, it was a lot of trial and error of adjustments . The shop manual gives you a lot of good info on the way it is supposed to be set up , but for me often hard to understand .

The problem could be in the shifter box on the steering column.

The suggestion to disconnect the shifter rods is a good one. That will help you determine if the problem is in the shifting linkage or the transmission.

Even though the shift lever in the car moves forwards and backwards the shifter rod and pin may not move from the R-1 shift dog to the 2-3 shift dog. (Not sure I am using the right words.)

It could be as simple as the box is full of old grease and dirt so things will not move properly.

One simple check would be to take the cover off that box and watch how things move when the shift lever on the steering column is moved.

ggvette,

The 46-48 Chat Homepage is discussing a similar problem. The 46-48 transmission is the same as yours so read their replies for more advice.

Good luck, Mike
